Anyone who has undertaken learning Lomi Lomi massage realizes that it is not an easy massage to master in terms of formality and technique. It requires a bit more effort, a bit more commitment than a classic massage. For instance, due to the technique, the fact that we have to work low on our legs, that we work bent over the client’s body. The movements in the massage are certain and flowing, the pace adjusted, often to the background music.

Demonstration of Lomi Lomi massage during the course can evoke some resistance in the minds of students. It is a resistance that has two bases. One base is that basically, I won’t manage. That is, basically resistance resulting from the fact that I can’t do it, that it is too difficult for me. Because one compares oneself to a person proficient in the art of Hawaiian massage. Ultimately, succumbing to doubt leads to withdrawal and resignation.

In the second case, resistance can be somewhat mobilizing for our ego.

How come I can’t do it, I won’t manage?

Such thoughts accompanied me at the beginning of my journey in Lomi Lomi massage. I was sure that at some point I would catch on. At some point, I would achieve mastery anyway.

However, it had its price, and as you can probably guess, it was about burnout, loss of energy and motivation, and even overusing my own body. For me, it led to joint dysfunctions and frequent visits to the physiotherapist.

Right after completing the course, I was very engaged in my practice from the start. I performed all the movements that needed to be done precisely, and on the other hand, dance in Lomi Lomi massage came to me through the back door. It took a long time before I let go of the rigid adherence to the technical side of Hawaiian massage and allowed myself to dance in Lomi Lomi Nui. To dance, which is essentially part of this massage.

On one hand, during the session, there was rigid technique with me, and on the other hand, intuitive dance. These two forms of expression in Lomi Lomi massage never met. They never settled with each other until, basically, one could say that Lomi massage started to bore me. Because I was always somewhere in that technique, and on the side, dance was always knocking. Only when I let go of all form, all technique, did I really start to massage. I started doing real Lomi Lomi.

Dance is part of Lomi Lomi Nui massage.

Dance in Lomi Lomi is otherwise leading the body on a deep level, it is intuitive communication, listening to the needs of the recipient on a completely different scale. Combined with the nature of movement and the body, its needs, we are able to offer the best massage to the client.

My conclusion is that only when I completely let go of the technique did I start to dance. Only when I started to dance in Lomi Lomi massage. I began to create this massage anew.

I freed myself and thanks to that I provided extraordinary experiences to the massage recipient, but also to myself. This massage became a kind of art of touch, an art of creation, an art that never ends and never gets boring.

Hula dance over the ocean, sunset.

So now I can confidently say.

Learn this technique during the course, and then during the very first massage. During the first session, forget everything and start dancing and only then, when you start dancing. That’s when the technique will slowly come to you. And it will suddenly reveal itself to you.

As far as I remember this move, suddenly I remember that one, where did it come from, etc. Thanks to this, you will be more relaxed and freer in Lomi Lomi massage.

Overcoming barriers on the path to mastery in Lomi Lomi

Learning Lomi Lomi Nui massage, although extremely satisfying, presents students with a number of significant challenges:

  1. Mental resistance: Beginners often feel an internal block, thinking “it’s too difficult” or “I can’t do it”. This resistance is rooted in comparing oneself to those proficient in this art.
  2. Demanding technique: Lomi Lomi massage requires mastering specific movements, working low on the legs, and fluidity adjusted to the rhythm of the music. It’s much more than in the case of classic massage.
  3. Challenge for the ego: Alongside fears, thoughts like “How come I can’t do it?” also arise. It’s a natural reaction when our ego faces new challenges.
  4. Risk of burnout: Overly striving for perfection, at the expense of one’s own body and energy, can lead to physical dysfunctions and loss of motivation.

However, it is precisely overcoming these barriers that is a key part of the journey to mastering Lomi Lomi massage. It requires time, commitment, and above all – the courage to allow oneself to “dance” and trust intuition, instead of rigidly sticking to the technique itself.

Ultimately, it is at this moment, when these challenges are overcome, that Lomi Lomi begins to come alive, becoming a unique, never-boring art of touch.
